CERTIFICATE IN COUNSELLING PSYCHOLOGY
OVERVIEW
This programme aims at introducing individuals to the rudimentary skills and knowledge in foundational practice of counselling. Learners will be equipped to serve as first aid counselling practitioners in the case where professional counsellors are not available. They will also be educated to gain the skill and knowledge in referring cases and making follow-up where applicable.
The skills and knowledge acquired in the certificate programme in counselling psychology would be useful to anyone who has a personal or professional interest in practicing counselling skills in their social, personal and professional life. These skills are beneficial to a wide spectrum of people wanting to be lay counsellors and those in other professions who apply counselling skills in their fields of work. On completion of this programme, the individual would be accorded with the status of a Lay Counsellor after fulfilling all procedures with Ghana Psychology Council (GPC).
OBJECTIVES:
- Introducing students to the rudimentary skills and knowledge required in foundational counselling practice.
- Enhancing students’ professional relationship skillsets, through the adoption of key principles of practice from Personality Psychology and Organizational Psychology.
- Equipping students to serve as first aid counselling practitioners (Lay Counsellors) within their organizations and communities, in such instances where professional counsellors are not available.
- Educating students to gain the skills and knowledge in referring cases, making follow ups where applicable and adopting cyber techniques in handling counselling-related cases.
ENTRY REQUIREMENT:
REGULAR APPLICANTS
Applicants must have Credits (A1-C6) in three (3) Core Subjects, including Mathematics, English Language and Social studies. Any two (2) elective subjects.
NB: Students with grade D7 will write entrance examination to justify their admission progress.
MATURE APPLICANTS
- Applicant must be professionals (teachers, religious leaders, human resource personnel, nurse, and social worker among others) whose tasks require the application of counselling skill.
- Applicants must be at least 25 years and above
- He/she must be of sound mind, be able to communicate and have a good proficiency in the English language. Entrance examination would be written.

CERTIFICATE IN CHILD AND ADOLESCENT COUNSELLING
OVERVIEW
This course introduces students to the general concept of Child Protection, by uncovering the scope and basic assumptions that underlie the. Topics in this course will therefore focus on understanding the historical antecedents of Child Protection, the various schools of thought therein, key challenges in safeguarding children within the African context, and championing the course of Child Protection in society. Key policy documents such as the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC), the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR) and THE CHILDREN'S ACT of Ghana (1998) will also be thoroughly examined.
OBJECTIVES:
- To explore the nature and scope of child and adolescent counselling.
- To introduce students to child protection measures and interventions
- To examine the legalities of child protection and the frameworks for enforcing the rights of children.
- To explore the various laws and policy documents that seek to safeguard children across diverse sociocultural backgrounds.

- Participants should possess at least a Certificate in Counselling Psychology
- Should have at least one experience in face-to-face counselling

CERTIFICATE IN ACADEMIC AND CAREER COUNSELLING
OVERVIEW:
This course aims at introducing student-counsellors to the basics of school and academic counselling. Topics in this course will concentrate on understanding the nature and scope of academic counselling, the roles of a school counsellor, the relevance of school or academic counselling and how to ensure effective counselling systems for students at the basic and secondary levels of education. It will also provide an overview of career counselling and the essential issues surrounding career identification and development.
OBJECTIVES:
- To explore the fundamental elements of academic and school-based counselling.
- To examine mental health issues in schools, and how to manage such issues as lay counsellors.
- To examine the role of teachers and counsellors in promoting the psychosocial wellbeing of special-needs students.
- To expose students to some essential concepts and principles relevant to the career identification and development process.
- Help students gain fundamentals skills in career counselling that will help them guide prospective clients in their career decisions and development.
